Harshit walks us through his philosophy for energy-efficient high-rise lighting. He also speaks about the evolution of innovative LEDs and human-centric lighting.

What is your philosophy for energy-efficient high-rise lighting?
When it comes to high-rises, my philosophy is to treat light not just as illumination, but as a layer of architecture. High-rises consume enormous energy, and lighting plays a significant role in this. I believe in designing with “light where it is needed” rather than over-lighting. This means using daylight as the first source, and complementing it with efficient artificial lighting. Smart controls, such as occupancy sensors, dimmers, and daylight sensors, help reduce waste. Facade lighting should be designed with precision optics to enhance form without spilling into the night sky. To me, energy-efficient lighting in high-rises is about finding a balance between functional brightness inside and dramatic yet restrained lighting outside, while minimising energy use overall.

How has human-centric lighting evolved of late?
Lighting today is no longer about just brightness; it’s about well-being! Human-centric lighting has undergone rapid evolution in recent years. Previously, offices and homes had uniform white lights, which often caused eye strain and fatigue. Now, we understand that light affects our body clock, mood, and productivity. The shift has been towards tunable lighting that mimics natural daylight, cooler tones in the morning to energise us, and warmer tones in the evening to relax us. In healthcare and workplaces, human-centric lighting is helping people stay alert, sleep better, and feel healthier. As designers, we now place people at the centre of lighting design, not just the space.

SpaceCraft Interiors_ACEUpdate

As an architect, what are your thoughts on the factors influencing outdoor facade lighting and energy optimisation?
Outdoor facade lighting is where architecture meets storytelling. Factors that influence it include the building’s function, its architectural style, the surrounding context, and the brand identity it wants to project. A hotel may want a warm, inviting glow, while a corporate tower may prefer sharp, linear highlights.

Climate also plays a role. For example, cities with high humidity or dust need durable, low-maintenance fittings. From an energy point of view, optimisation comes through smart choices: using LED luminaires with high efficacy, integrating sensors to switch off lights in off-peak hours, and applying focused lighting rather than flooding the whole facade. Instead of covering every inch, accentuating key features like columns, crowns, or textures creates drama with less energy. Thoughtful design ensures that facades shine bright without leaving a heavy carbon footprint.

What are the innovations in LED facade lighting?
The world of LED facade lighting has seen exciting innovations. Earlier, facades relied on metal halide or fluorescent lights, which were energy-hungry and limited in effect. Today, LEDs have transformed possibilities. Pixel-controlled LEDs allow dynamic displays, turning facades into digital canvases. RGBW technology gives architects a wide palette of colours while maintaining efficiency. 3D mapping and media facades now let buildings interact with the city, changing moods for festivals, awareness campaigns, or celebrations. Importantly, LEDs are lasting longer, consuming less power, and offering better optics. Combined with smart control systems, facades can now shift from vibrant spectacle to soft elegance with just a tap, all while staying energy-conscious.

In this interaction, Ar.
